Starting The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? Well for one thing they are very beautiful items. And just like natural diamonds they can become extremely valuable over the years. Many hobbyists love to collect and work with the nearly 150 types of gemstones found today. Read long as we look at the hobby of collecting loose gemstones.

The first thing you need to do in beginning this hobby the proper way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can find a number of books to broaden your knowledge and that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

Number one to look at is the color of the gemstone. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have colors that are close to the exact spectral color of red, orange, yellow, green, blue or violet. Muted gemstone colors or are too dark lowers the value per carat.

Cut is one of the all-important 4Cs and is used not only to appraise diamonds but gemstones as well. A precision cut gemstone highlights the natural color of the gemstone, lessen any inclusions and highlight the proportions and symmetry of the stone. One excellent way to determine the excellence in its cut is to check if it is able to reflect light on a consistent level over the stones complete surface. If the stone is cut on the shallow side most of the light will refract out instead of reflecting internally. The gem appears washed out.

A third consideration is the clarity. This means the purity of the gemstone or the absence of internal inclusions, particles or spots within the crystal structure. Without a doubt, zero flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

You will often find that gemstones are often listed according to size because it is more uniform than carat weight. But different gemstones may have the same size but different carat weights and consequently, different pricing structures. This is due to the nature of gemstone difference regarding specific gravity or relative density depending upon the chemical composition and crystalline structure. A one carat round brilliant diamond, for example with normal proportions is approximately 6.5 mm around. A ruby that is the same size will weigh in at 1.55 carats.

Collecting various gemstones can be very rewarding hobby. And there are so many different types in precious and semi precious stones that you can collect. You can collect gemstones like Olivine (Peridot), Amethyst (cardinal gem) or Tourmaline for instance. The varieties are nearly endless. And if money is tight you can go gemstone hunting and find the raw materials instead of buying them. Just in the United States in California you can find Agate, Benitoite, Californite, Diamond, Citrine, Tourmaline, Abalone Pearl, Kunzite, Chrysopras

Even the hardest gemstone variety can be vulnerable to breakage if it has
inclusions that weaken the crystal structure. Exercise common sense: if you have
a ring set with a softer gem variety or an included stone, take it off before
strenuous activity. Even the hardest gemstones like Diamonds, Rubies and
Sapphires can shatter with a single well-placed blow especially if they have
inclusions, which weaken the crystal structure.
